Earthquake felt in Istanbul becomes twitter trending topic
Just as I was talking on the phone with my mother living in Istanbul at about 1:45 PM EST today, she felt an earthquake that lasted a few seconds. The Earthquake (in Turkish: “DEPREM" immediately became a trending topic on twitter:
Within seconds of her mentioning the earthquake on the phone, I could see thousands of Turkish twitterers were referring to the “Deprem" within seconds, way before it could be reported by any news site. That’s the power of twitter…
In the hour following the earthquake various phrases became trending topics, including: Deprem, Deprem Oldu, and Marmara Denizi (which means Sea of Marmara, believed to be the epicenter of this earthquake on October 3, 2010).
With the pains of the devastating 1999 earthquake, let’s hope there is nothing bigger coming up.
